Be sure to access the additional information in the links provided in the “show more” section of this episode!

Episode 7: Quarter & Eighth Notes Only, Accent Ex on 1 Hand, & the Flam

This week we only deal with quarter and eighth notes helping you understand that eighth notes are only twice as fast as quarter notes.  We also learn Accent Exercise on One Hand helping you differentiate between the down stroke and tap.  That leads up the 2nd rudiment that we’ll learn, which is the Flam.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Be sure to access the additional information in the links provided in the “show more” section of this episode!

Episode 8: Finishing Study #2 and Flams, Study #3 Using Quarter Rests

This week we review Accent Exercise on One Hand and well as Flams.  Remember, #’s 6, 7, 8 from Study #2 were to be done on your own because we play it together in this episode.  We also complete Study #3 utilizing the Quarter Rest.  As we’ve indicated in the previous episodes, the “Gelatin Mold Effect” is a term I give to the methodology that we are strict (not stiff) with our movements at first, but later to learn to move and breathe with the groove.  Just like in the movie the Karate Kid, at first the teacher was strict with his movements.  This helps develop muscle memory at a quicker rate.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Be sure to access the additional information in the links provided in the “show more” section of this episode!

Episode 9: Learn Some Drum Stretches, Solo #1, and Music Terminology

Episode 11: Study #4 Eighth Notes and Eighth Rests Plus, Test Time!

This week we review the Flam Taps at 60 BPM’s using the eighth notes.  Also we go over Study #4 using only eighth notes and eighth rests (you’re either playing or not).  We talk about the importance of practicing even if it’s just a little bit.  A lot of times we’re our own worst enemy when it comes to practicing.  We have good intentions on wanting to do it, but keep putting it off.  Plus welcome back my son to check on how his drumming is coming along, and we have two tests that may surprise you.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Be sure to access the additional information in the links provided in the “show more” section of this episode!

Episode 12: Testing Single Stroke Roll at 85 BMP’s and Study #5!

Accent Exercise on One Hand is vital so this is why we keep reviewing it.  Then we test your skills on the Single Stroke Roll at 85 BPM’s. Moving into Study #5, we focus on Quarter Notes, Eighth Notes, and Eighth Note Rests.  We realize more that it’s about waiting to play the next note over.  I demonstrate (very poorly) of me playing a flute; or rather, imitating a flue.  When I make a sustained sound, the rhythms take on a different “feel” as opposed to just playing on the practice pad.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Episode 13: Double Stroke Roll and Study #6 Using the Dotted Note

Remember the special hand clap that we’ve done since Episode 1, and made things appear and disappear?  Well, that was your first rhythm lesson and now we get to see what it looks like on paper!  Plus we learn a new rudiment, the Double Stroke Roll.  As a teenager, I frequented the oldest single-owner drum shop in the US, Fred Pierce’s Studio Drum Shop.  Around age 15, I knew all the 26 Standard American Drum Rudiments and some others not not on the list.  Frustrated one day of having to keep up with all these rudiments, Fred Pierce gave me some of the most profound pieces of advice: “Adam, it all boils down to 3 rudiments: Singles, Doubles, and the Flam.  Anything outside of that is a combination of any of those.”  Made total sense to me, and the “stress” was greatly reduced.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Be sure to access the additional information in the links provided in the “show more” section of this episode!

Episode 14: Double Stroke Roll Backwards Testing Flam Taps and Solo #2!

We review the Double Stroke Roll and learn another way to practice the rudiment as we’ve done with the Single Stroke Roll.  By turning your sticks backwards, you give your fingers a greater workout which is needed.  We also learn more dynamics and other music terminology in Solo Number 2!  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Be sure to access the additional information in the links provided in the “show more” section of this episode!

Episode 15: The rest of Solo #2 and How to Be Your Own Best Teacher

This week we finish Solo #2 and then play it all together at 75 BPM’s.  Get ready to test your Flam Taps at 120 BPM’s!  We also talk more about how to practice so you get the most out of your time.  Be your own best teacher is the mantra expressed on this show and the need to give yourself a drum lesson when practicing.  There’s also the concept of plateauing when one is feeling that they’re not getting any better. Don’t give up, because you will hit another growth spurt.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Be sure to access the additional information in the links provided in the “show more” section of this episode!

Episode 16: 16th Note Warm-up and the Concept of Rhythmical Cells!

This week we introduce a new note value, the 16th note.  As the note values decrease, reading and counting can be difficult.  The concept of a Rhythmical Cell; which is any combination of notes that make up one beat, is a term I use to visualize the beat instead of the individual notes.  Much like reading a book, most don’t read letter for letter to make up the word.  At the beginning of learning how to read music, we usually start slow counting it all out.  After a while, you’ll recognize that these combination of notes make up one beat or Rhythmical Cell.  Then we free ourselves by reading beat for beat much like we do when we read word for word in a book.  In the 16th Note Warm-Up and Study #7, we start to employ this method of reading.  Natural Sticking is a new concept we start to use with these rhythmical cells.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Be sure to access the additional information in the links provided in the “show more” section of this episode!

Episode 17: The rest of 16th Note Warm-up at 45 BPM and the Paradiddle

This week, we take the other half of the 16th Note Warm-up at 45 BPM, and play it all at 75 BPM.  Last but not least, we introduce the Single Paradiddle.  One of the most frustrating rudiments I learned in beginning band at the age of the 12 when I was in 7th grade.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Be sure to access the additional information in the links provided in the “show more” section of this episode!

Episode 18: Review Paradiddles and Study #8 With Just 8th and 16 Notes

This week we review the Single Paradiddle and at first, we apply the “Gelatin Mold Effect” by making sure there is a contrast from the accented note and non-accented notes.  I reference to my experience with the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra, playing “Polar Express.”  In that piece, I’m playing consecutive Paradiddles back to back for a long time.  In order for me to do that effectively, I had to have the experience of playing Paradiddles with a metronome.  In the piece, I release that ‘gelatin mold’ to make it produce the sound of a train.  We go through Study #8 and retain that natural sticking method with just 8th and 16th notes.  We also talk about practicing in front of a mirror or better yet, recording yourself practicing.  That way, you’re able to pick out flaws you normally wouldn’t while playing.  This helps a great deal in being your own best teacher.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Be sure to access the additional information in the links provided in the “show more” section of this episode!

Episode 19: 16th, 8th Notes/Rests & Accent Ex With Alternating Hands

This week we go over Study #9 dealing only with 16th notes, 8th notes and rests.  We apply the same concept natural of sticking and looking at it in Rhythmical Cells even though there are rests involved.  Next, we go over the Accent Exercise with Alternating Hands helping you accent on any part of the beat: whether it be on the 1, and, e, or a.  Now we’re starting to see building blocks of drum set solos using both this exercise and the 16th Note Warm-up.  Always be your own best teacher, and remember to keep swinging those sticks.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Episode 20: Double Paradiddles, Solo #3, Do You Want to Learn Wipe Out?

When I started getting serious about the drums around 14-15, many family members asked if I can play, “Wipe Out” by the Surfaris.  Ron Wilson played the drums on that track and my very first band director, Mr. O told me I can play that song now because I can play Single and Double Paradiddles.  We get into Solo #3 detailing that sticking.  One day I was asked by my Aunt Mac and Uncle Jack if I can play “Wipe Out”.  I didn’t have drums with me since it was at a family engagement, so I played it with my hands.  Then they asked, “Do you know In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida?”  We will talk about that song more in the next season, but that changed my drumming life.  Thank you Aunt Mac and Uncle Jack for letting me listen to that record on Christmas Eve!  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Episode 21: The Multiple Bounce Roll with Special Guest, Will James!

In this episode, we uncover a new concept with using the rebound of the drum.  The Multiple Bounce Roll allows the drummer to create a sustained sound on the drum.  It is also called the Buzz Roll, Concert Roll, or Press Roll.  With us this week is a very special guest who is the Principle Percussionist to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Will James.  He explains in his book, “The Modern Concert Snare Drum Roll” the necessary movements to create a good multiple bounce stroke.  We also discuss his online education series, “The Repertoire” which is a compilation of video tutorials demonstrating some of the most played orchestral excepts in percussions.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Episode 22: Concert Roll, Double Beat, Study #10 using 16th Note Rests

We review the Multiple Bounce Roll and then go over Study #10 using 16th note rests.  We then test the Double Stroke Roll at 120 BPM.  This leads us into our next exercise, Double Beat.  This is a popular warm-up in drum corps in many variations.  This simple variation allows you to focus on a technique that has several names: Push Pull, Open Closed, and what I’ve called the Drop Catch Method.  It is triggered in the hinge of the as you gain speed.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Episode 26: Two New Exercises, Study #13 Focusing on Triplet 16th Notes

This week we learn two new exercises: Da Da Digga Digga and Digga Digga Darz.  These are two popular warm-ups and have many variations.  Da Da Digga Digga helps you understand the difference between regular 16th notes and triplet 16th notes by using the eighth as the common denominator.  Much like using the quarter note last week as the common denominator with triplet eight and regular eighth notes, the eighth note allows you to do the same for triplet 16th and regular 16th notes.  We also cover Study #13 using this method.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Episode 28: Solo #5 & All at 80 BPM. What is a Rhythmical Accelerando?

This week we take the rest of Solo #5 and I play it all at 80 BPM.  Be sure to spend most of your time on the stuff that is difficult to play.  Whether it be transitions from one sections to the next, one line to the next, or dynamic adjustments, that’s where you should spend most of  your time.  Measures 23 and 27 we encounter rhythmical cells that audibly appear to get faster.  The tempo does not increase and this is what I call a rhythmical accelerando.  It is when a succession of note values from greater to smaller giving the auditory illusion the tempo is getting faster.  You can also do the opposite by doing the revers creating a rhythmical ritardando.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Episode 29: Test Accent Ex Alt Hands & a New Time Signature, 2/4 Time!

We test the Accent Exercise with Alternating Hands at 80 BPM!  Then move on tot Study #14 where we learn a new time signature, 2/4 time.  Much like 4/4, the quarter note still gets the beat, but we’re now dealing with 2 beats per measure instead of 4.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Episode 30: Well Something Happened Today, We Have a Surprise Guest!

This week is a little unconventional in that my son, Kai informs me of a package was just delivered.  It’s the Cajun Practice Pad by Dr. John Wooton, and the rubber feels like the old Real Feel pads back in the 90’s.  Clarence Boudreaux, Dr. Wooton’s cousin on his “momma’s side like dat” enhanced the design by Dr. Wooton and manufactures it today with the help of the “cajun elves.”  Clarence also states, “His neighbor is my mom’s uncle’s nephew’s little sister’s Parrain’s healthcare provider’s voodoo priest…or something like dat.  It’s a little convoluted but we are kin.”  Clarence gives us a surprise call asking if we’ve received the pad OK and gives us a moment of his time to explain the design and manufacturing process.  He brings up good words of wisdom for all of us who at times don’t feel like practicing or playing.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Be sure to access the links provided in the “show more” section of this episode to find out how to purchase a Cajun Practice Pad or any of Dr. Wooton’s books.

Episode 31: One of the Most Inclusive and Diverse Communities Out There

This week, we discover that Clarence Boudreaux is actually Dr. John Wooton himself and the drum community happens to be one of the most inclusive and diverse people in the world.  It doesn’t matter what you look like or how you talk.  Practically all drummers have to market themselves and that can feel weird at times (at least it is for me).  Dr. Wooton created the character to do the marketing for him.  Pretty smart if I may say.  Then we head over to Study #14 with more 2/4 time exercises.  We test Double Beat at 130 BPM and review Digga Digga Darz.  Knowing these two exercises paves the way to isolate the diddle into what the next rudiment will be: The Drag or Half Drag, or controversially The Ruff.  Some educations say the ruff is nothing more than a short Single Stroke Roll.  In the early 1900’s, they are synonymous rudiments as Frank Arsenault demonstrated the 26 rudiments developed by the National Association of Rudimental Drummers.  Today we have the 40 Percussive Arts Society International Drum Rudiments which never mentions the term, ruff.  There’s really no right or wrong in the terminology and it’s important to know our drum history.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Episode 32: Reviewing the Drag and Utilizing it in the Drag Exercise

This week we review The Drag and learn a new exercise conveniently named: Drag Exercise.  This exercise allows you to isolate the drag or diddle of The Double Stroke Roll which enables you to drag on any part of the beat using 16th notes.  Try improvising by playing 16th notes and placing a Drag wherever you desire.  You can come up with some interesting rhythms as well as later realizing these can be building blocks for drum fills and drum solos.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Episode 33: Recognize the Rhythm in Solo #6 & Learn The Single Drag Tap

I let you folks go and work on the Drag Exercise, because this week we jump right into Solo #6.  We learn the concept of Dal Segno and Fine.  These are sometimes combined creating a Dal Segno al Fine or D.S. al Fine; which means, go back to the Sign and play to the end (Fine).  Starting on measure 17, we play a rhythm that is familiar to most.  The rhythm resembles that of William Tell Overture by Giaccino Rossini.  This piece of music was also used in the TV series, The Lone Ranger.  After going through Solo #6, we learn the Single Drag or the Single Drag Tap.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

This week we cover Solo #10 which incorporates The Multiple Bounce Roll and a new term called the fermata.  A fermata is nothing more than a hold of a note that is cut off by the conductor.  I make reference to the Luny Tunes where Bugs Bunny conducts this opera singer and hold the note until the singer is unable to hold it any longer.  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!

Episode 49: A Year in Review! 52 Weeks of Drumming + The 9 Stroke Roll

This is the last episode of the season where we reflect on the 52 weeks of drumming!  We also learn the Nine Stroke Roll and discover you’ve already played it before in Digga Digga Darz.  We’ve learned 14 rudiments and gained an intermediate to advanced level of reading rhythm.  For additional reading, I recommend two books that challenges you on the same level of reading as before, but more of it.  We also talk about season 2, when it will be released, as well as possibly making some changes.  Please let us know your thoughts on going live with season 2 in the comments!  Be sure to pick up Learning to Drum Book 1 and  order your copy today!
